What’s ALL The Fuss About Mother’s day?

This notable day is usually celebrated in the month of March or May. And we think it is one of the most glorious and prominent days of the year- to celebrate for your mother. Many people celebrate Mothers day with the jewelry gifts,  a card, some flowers and breakfast in bed. Some cynics say that greeting card companies and florists invented the holiday. Yes, businesses do profit from it but that doesn’t mean that they created it. In the USA, mother’s day was initially celebrated in the early 20th century but before that, mothers day was first ever celebrated by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Anna Jarvis was a peace activist and helped wounded soldiers. She wanted to honor her mother by setting aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed that they were ‘the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.’ Anna started the aggressive campaign to establish Mother’s day in the US. Within a couple of years it caught on, and in 1914 it became an official holiday in the US. Many people celebrate Mothers day with a card, some flowers and breakfast in bed. Some cynics say that the holiday was invented by greeting card companies and florists. Yes, businesses do profit from it but that doesn’t mean that it was created by them.

Why should you celebrate it?

Celebrating mother’s day is about peace and respecting and cherishing the fight Anna Jarvis had with the US government to make mothers day an official holiday. Today, as women become stronger and more vocal- we should play our part in celebrating and making our mothers feel special. Mother’s day has its roots in political activism for peace and reconciliation. This day was born out of community work to improve the living conditions of the soldiers during the war. It is a day not to just honor our own mothers but everyone else’s too. As comedian Jimmy Fallon recently observed, if you hire a cleaning lady to give your mom the day off, you’re basically just making someone else’s mom work on Mother’s day. So this Mother’s Day, by all means, cook your mother a special meal, and give her a card to tell her that she is special. Buy her some jewellery- because lets face the facts, all women love gems. If you are a father, of course you should teach your children to honour their mother, appreciate her hard work, and give her a day off not just today but every week.
