Diamond color doesn't describe the color a diamond displays. It describes the absence of color. The less color a diamond has, the higher its color grade, and generally the more valuable it becomes. Most diamonds used in fine jewelry fall on a spectrum from colorless to faintly yellow or brown, caused by trace amounts of nitrogen absorbed during formation deep within the earth.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) established the industry-standard color grading scale, which runs from D (colorless) through Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless: D, E, F
These are the rarest and most prized grades. D is the purest, with absolutely no detectable color even under 10x magnification. E and F have traces of color visible only to a trained gemologist under controlled lab conditions. To the naked eye, all three look identical when mounted in jewelry.

Near Colorless: G, H, I, J
This range offers excellent value. Color in G and H grades is difficult to detect face-up in a mounted stone, and both remain exceptionally white in most settings. I and J grades show a very slight warmth, most noticeable in larger stones or when set in white metal. Faint: K, L, M

Very Light: N–R

GIA graders assess diamonds face-down, comparing each stone to a set of master diamonds that define the boundary of each grade. The face-down position eliminates the effect of cut, which can disguise or amplify color. Grading happens under controlled daylight-equivalent lighting.

Some diamonds fluoresce blue under ultraviolet light — this appears as a separate notation on a grading report (None, Faint, Medium, Strong, Very Strong) and doesn't affect the color grade itself.

For lower-color diamonds in the I–M range, medium to strong blue fluorescence can actually improve their appearance in sunlight, making the stone look whiter. For D–F colorless diamonds, strong fluorescence can sometimes cause a slightly milky appearance, which most buyers prefer to avoid. Lab-grown diamonds use the same GIA color scale and are graded identically to natural diamonds. CVD-grown stones (the most common production method) can sometimes show a brownish or grayish tint that the standard D–Z yellow axis doesn't fully capture — which is why reviewing actual stone images matters more for lab-grown purchases. A grading report from GIA, IGI, or AGS will list diamond color as a single letter (e.g., "H"), alongside cut, clarity, and carat weight. Fluorescence is listed separately and doesn't affect the color grade. For fancy-colored diamonds (yellow, pink, blue, etc.), GIA uses an entirely different grading system — not the D–Z scale.
