What Is Diamond Shape?
Diamond shape is the outline of a diamond when viewed face-up. Round, oval, pear, princess, emerald and marquise are all common shapes. Shape is a matter of personal style and is separate from cut quality, though it does influence the look of the stone, such as how much it sparkles, how large it appears, and how well it hides inclusions.
Diamond shapes fall into two groups: round brilliant and fancy shapes. Round is the most popular, and every other shape is considered fancy, including oval, pear, princess, emerald, cushion, marquise, radiant, Asscher and heart. Carat measures weight, not size, which is why an oval and a round of the same carat can look different on the hand. Read our diamond carat guide for the full explanation. Natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds come in the same shapes.

Shape Of Diamond vs Cut Of Diamonds
People often use “shape” and “cut” as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. Shape describes the outline. Cut style describes how the facets are arranged inside that outline. A third term, cut quality, describes how well those facets perform.
Shape is the outline of a diamond seen from above. Round, oval, pear, and princess are shapes. It’s a style choice and says nothing about quality.
Cut is how the diamond is faceted. It has two meanings:
- Cut style: The facet pattern, either brilliant, step, or mixed. It controls the type of sparkle.
- Cut quality: Cut quality: A grade for proportions, symmetry, and polish. It controls how well the diamond returns light, and it applies to all different diamond cuts, from round brilliant to emerald.
